Brightspace Training & Support : Campus Faculty: Copy a Previous Course

Brightspace support guides for faculty teaching in our campus programs.

How to Use This Guide

In Brightspace, there is often no need to reinvent the wheel. If you have items in a previous Brightspace course that you wish to use in your current semester's Brightspace course, you can copy over as little or as much as you wish.

Note: If you choose to copy over all components of your previous course, everything will copy except for student data (student grades, discussion posts, dropbox submissions, quiz attempts, etc.).

If you have questions about copying over previous course material that are not answered in this Guide or the FAQ page, please let us know at asktei@sjcme.edu

If you would prefer that T.E.I. copy over the course material for you, please contact asktei@sjcme.edu. We are happy to help!

Copy a Previous Course

Why Would I Copy All Components from a Previous Course?

Copying all components from your previous course may save you time in building out your new semester's Brightspace course. For example, everything but student data copies, so if you have News items (be sure to change the dates!), calendar items (again, watch the dates), Dropbox folders, graded assignments, etc., you would not need to "rebuild" those in your new shell (Brightspace course). You could copy all components and then edit as needed.

If you do not want to copy all components but would like to bring one or a few items over into your new Brightspace shell, be sure to check out the "Copy Select Components" information included in another section of this Guide.

Note: If you prefer written instructions, see the PDF below the video or in the Written Instructions box on the right-hand side of the page.

Why Would I Only Copy "Select Components"?

If you only want to copy one or just a few things from a previous Brightspace course, you would choose "select components" when copying over the course material, that way you can pick and choose exactly what you want to copy.

This video demonstrates how to copy select components into your Brightspace shell (new Brightspace course).

Note: If you prefer written instructions, please view the PDF below the video or in the Written Instructions box on the right-hand side of the page.

How to Move Course Content After Using "Select Components"

When you use Select Components to bring course material from another Brightspace course into a new shell, the module housing the content will appear at the bottom of the module list. This video demonstrates how to move the content to where you want it, as well as delete an empty module.

If you have any questions, please contact ldalfonso@sjcme.edu.

I made a mistake copying my course. HELP!

Don't worry, we have all done it. Just shoot an email to asktei@sjcme.edu and someone can reset your course for you.

I copied over "select components" but they ended up at the bottom of my course. How do I move everything to where it needs to be?
